Life Offers Second Chances: Motherhood in the Context of Severe Mental Disorder

Resumen

La maternidad es un rol exigente, demandante, que supone muchos retos para la mujer. La crianza se ve influida por muchos factores tanto personales como ambientales. Requiere de resiliencia, estabilidad emocional y brindar cuidados de manera constante. Para las madres que tienen un trastorno mental grave (TMG) estas demandas pueden volverse difíciles, generando dificultades en el apego, en las rutinas de cuidado y en el manejo del estrés. Pero la maternidad puede ser una fuente de orgullo, motivación y esperanza para el futuro. A través del relato de una madre con trastorno esquizoafectivo se consigue explorar en profundidad la experiencia subjetiva y reconstruir los acontecimientos significativos que han marcado su trayectoria vital y su vivencia como madre con TMG, permitiendo una comprensión de cómo un TMG impacta en la construcción del rol materno y en las prácticas de crianza.

Abstract

Motherhood constitutes a complex and highly demanding social role, involving significant responsibilities and challenges for women. Parenting is shaped by a wide range of personal and environmental factors and requires psychological resilience, emotional regulation, and the sustained provision of care. In mothers living with a severe mental disorder (SMD), these demands may be further intensified, potentially giving rise to difficulties in attachment processes, caregiving routines, and stress management. However, motherhood may also represent a meaningful source of personal fulfilment, motivation, and future-oriented hope. Through the life narrative of a mother diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, this study explores the subjective experience of motherhood in depth, reconstructing the significant life events that have shaped both her life trajectory and her maternal experience while living with an SMD. This narrative approach facilitates an in depth understanding of how severe mental disorder influences the construction of the maternal role and parenting practices.
