Resumen

Objetivo principal: Describir las experiencias maternas en la alimentación infantil durante la enfermedad diarreica aguda en un contexto rural. Método: Investigación cualitativa con diseño descriptivo, participaron 13 madres de niños que sufrieron de diarrea aguda y que viven en una zona rural ubicada en Pósope Alto en Chiclayo, Perú. La información se recolectó con una entrevista semiestructurada y fue procesada manualmente mediante análisis de contenido temático. Resultados principales: Se identificaron dos categorías principales: (a) Alimentos comúnmente evitados durante la diarrea aguda infantil, (b) Prácticas alimentarias recomendadas y consideradas apropiadas durante la diarrea aguda infantil. Conclusión principal: Las madres alimentaron a sus hijos durante la diarrea aguda según sus creencias y costumbres, lo que dio lugar a prácticas tanto inadecuadas (por ejemplo, la restricción del consumo de huevos, lácteos, menestras, frutas y verduras) como adecuadas (tales como ofrecer comidas blandas, líquidos, leche materna y sales de rehidratación oral). Es fundamental promover la educación materna que integre conocimientos científicos y culturales, optimizando así los cuidados durante estos episodios.

Abstract

Objective: To describe maternal experiences in infant feeding during acute diarrheal disease in a rural context. Methods: Qualitative research with descriptive design, 13 mothers of children suffering from acute diarrhea and living in a rural area located in Pósope Alto in Chiclayo, Peru participated. The information was collected through a semi-structured interview and processed manually by thematic content analysis. Results: Two main categories were identified: (a) Foods commonly avoided during acute childhood diarrhea. (b) Dietary practices recommended and considered appropriate during acute childhood diarrhea. Conclusions: Mothers fed their children during acute diarrhea according to their beliefs and customs, resulting in both inappropriate (e.g., restricting the consumption of eggs, dairy, legumes, fruits and vegetables) and appropriate practices (such as offering soft foods, liquids, breast milk and oral rehydration salts). It is essential to promote maternal education that integrates scientific and cultural knowledge, thus optimizing care during these episodes.
